DA Popularity is Crap

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 3, 2008, 1:36 PM

All About Me

I rarely ever make a journal in response to another journal, but I've been keeping my mouth shut about a lot of DA Drama for a while so it's sort of built up. I'm not going to be naming names because I don't want to start wars or anything, but I can't keep quiet anymore.

Deviant Art can be pretty frustrating to a lot of artists and unfortunately it's hard to "live" here. There are so many artists that are wonderfully unique, have a better grasp of art elements, and just tend to have a freshness about them... but they are silently hidden away within the labyrinth that is DA. We can blame it on the ignorant (not dumb just not knowing) masses that can't tell the difference between what is good art or what is bad art or we can blame it on DA's horrible system. Either way there isn't much that can be changed at this point.

It is sad that the popular is nothing but repetitive and dull, but that it's also shows how much the younger generation is perversely twisted. Whenever I take a gander at the front page popular I am always in sort of... shock. Not that I am horribly old or narrow minded, mind you, but that half the time I wonder what is mentally wrong with people. Fetish portraits is just soft core Porn, Yaoi prevails as a super norm making heterosexuals a dying breed, and don't even get me started with inflated art! Whatever "safe," (in the terms that it's PG-13 safe) art gets there is a string of shiny head shots that feels like a copy/paste cop-out to do anything else. DA has become a stagnant pond instead of promoting growth as an artist and because of this a lot of good artists are leaving DA seeking places where they can become greater than what they are.

The problem lies in the definition of what is or makes art. It's not really something that we can define, but DA only helps to promote one sort of mentality. Drones are really not what people are looking for, popularity doesn't mean a thing to an artists, but what it does do is show that what we're thinking, doing, experimenting isn't total fail either. I don't want people to get the wrong idea there's nothing wrong with liking something or not liking something. That is a measure of art too just that there are too many people that lack knowledge to make a good decision between something that is "shiny" and something that is executed well. Currently there are too many "I like it" and not enough "This is done well." It's annoying and disappointing.

Yes, it's nice to be popular and be on the front pages of DA popular. Yes, it's nice that we get a bunch of favorites and watches and page views... that's important to us because truthfully, as a good friend stated: "secretly every artist is an insecure, self-doubting, closet attention whore." We love it! We love to know that you love what we do! But are insanely jealous of the people that don't put in half the thought that we do and reach it so easily. We won't conform even if it kills us because if that was the case then nothing would ever change and the world would be a very boring and stagnant place.

When ever you have a large community you end up getting the "lowest common denominator" effect.
:iconjosukex:
its true...mainly the yaoi fanart.

that's a good point. particularly when it's unregulated and completely open.

I also think there's no motivation to try to put any fences around DA because it would reduce the numbers of people trying to participate, and the revenue coming in from advertising.

Ro - the problem is that DA has no direct competition at this point. None of the other sites that tried to emulate it have gotten anywhere because for the most part, artists want that attention, hence they will stay at DA.

The success of another site will rely on artists putting some standards in place. I do think MR and GFX and other places are right to institute some form of limited posting and an elite system.

But as long as some sites exist that tightly control things, there remains the "spillover" which is what is at DA.

It's stupid that retarded animu art of the copy-paste variety keeps showing up at the top, but there's good stuff that shows up if you arrange your front page right XD.

Amen to that. D< But naturally, the human mind is attracted to the shinier, better objects. They don't want to have to dig around to find the stuff in the back. Humans are lazy creatures, and so they have evolved into something very lowly.

So you're not the only one who noticed that? Same here...but the same goes for FF.net. All the popluar stories are the yoai fangirl service ones while the other stories are increasingly burried. Altough mine is not fantastic by any means, it only has about 4 loyal readers while the yoai stories will have 40...

personally, i have moments where I want to do a yaoi fanservice piece just to see if it suddenly gets more attention than my normal stuff.

on that same note, i keep wanting to do naruto fan art because i actually like the show, but I am afriad peoplewill think I am just trying to be popular... :/ but thats silly too. *headdesk*

but then i don't take DA seriously. its a place where i upload my art and make friends and my friends comment. *shrug*

but i agree, its scary sometimes what is popular. :'o

take the time, to learn to breath.

Why do you check the front page so often? I don't really care about it... and I don't think popularity is so important.
It's normal that some things are more liked than others, but that doesn't mean that they are better.
Drawing something only because it's pouplar it's a wrong thing to do, though.

But I not the best person to comment here, maybe, since I only fave Naruto works (I've a reason for this, ask if you want to know). ;)

This post is true on so many levels. I don't mind seeing Naruto/Bleach etc, fanart.. Its the types of fan-service-y yaoi crap (no, i'm not going to sugar coat it. =D ) that is popular, and its making it hard to find good fan art anywhere.. :(
To be honest, i don't care how popular i am or how many page views i get.. I just draw what i enjoy and want to share that... Plus i am a watch whore and watch a ton of people.. =/ But even then, i am dodging their yaoi stuffs (not that its horrible for someone to EVER portray gay or anything, just when the characters aren't actually gay.. it gets to me. =/ )
Ack, i suck at typing what i feel, sorry. >.<

This is why I am glad I A) am a little-known artist who works in traditional media instead of digital B) Don't give a flying rats arse about what other people think of my art.
